The Red Tent Movement
« on: January 19, 2012, 02:42:59 PM »
Many of you who attended the SEWHC this year enjoyed the Red Tent space- a nurturing, safe, and relaxing space to connect with your sisters, as well as yourself. It is so important for women to have spaces like this, where we can go to be at peace, find calm, release our emotions, find our creative fire, nurture ourselves in whatever ways feel good while delving into the Feminine Essence.

It is not news that we are daughters of the patriarchy- many of us feel this in one way or another. As well, many of us have internalized the patriarch and attack ourselves from the inside out with negative voices that degrade, oppress, and trivialize the feminine. The Red Tent Movement currently occurring across the country (and the globe) is an immense encouragement that women (and supportive men) are reclaiming the value of the feminine.

I am blessed to have access to a Red Tent where I live, and have participated twice monthly on the full and new moons in our circles for nearly two years. We sing, massage, cry, scream, laugh, tell stories, and are listened to in a totally confidential atmosphere. This is something that any woman can create in her community, or if you are longing for a community of sisters, this is a great way to start. Any woman can host a Red Tent space. Red Tents can look many different ways, whether it is an actual separate structure (tent, yurt, yom), or a room in a house, or a women only gathering in a living room. I knew a woman who rented out the event space above her local co-op once a month to host a Red Tent. There are many creative ways to do this!

Many Blessings,
Jenna Rose

I also am so blessed to have a Red Tent space in the community where I live and can't imagine life without it. I am so excited to hear about other women becoming involved in local Red Tents in their areas and all the motivation that is coming out of gathering together as sisters to make great change in ourselves, our communities and the world. It really is one woman at a time becoming empowered by sisterhood who inadvertendly spreads her wisdom and grace to those around her, causing this ripple effect. I am so excited to share something with ya'll! I am going to participate in a red tent project involving Rites of Passage ceremonies! I wanted to create a space to acknowledge and honor times in our lives where we may or may not have received the type of Rite of Passage ceremony we were hoping for. This involves first bleeding, leaving home, babies, weddings, which of course are the most popular, but I am so excited to hear about other stages in life where we really felt a shift and would have liked it to be honored ritually.
I'm curious if anyone has any experience holding space for other women who are experiencing a significant Rite of Passage in their lives and how they provided that for her. I am brand new to this concept and am searching for any and all ideas!
