Question about pokeroot berries?
« on: September 21, 2010, 03:53:33 PM »
Blessings ladies!

I just read Corinna Wood's article on Poke root, and I have a ton of it here on my property.  She says that you can use the berries as a dye.  I am wanting to have my daughter paint on my pregnant belly for pictures, and wondered if this dye is safe for pregnancy.  I know we absorb through our skin and just wanted to make sure my baby would be safe in this.

Thank you..

 8) Hi Marylynn...I got some wonderful info about poke berries from Susan Weed's website...I would suggest your researching this question with her at Wise Woman University or http://www.susanweed.com
Many blessings to you and little one...Sacredflower

Marylynn,

I took pokeberries internally as part of treatment for strep throat when I was unaware that I was six weeks pregnant (about 18 berries over the course of a week). I asked Jessica Godino (co-founder of Red Moon Herbs, licensed acupuncturist, herbal teacher at the Appalachia School of Holistic Herbalism & conference teacher) at the 2008 SEWHConference if taking the berries could have harmed my baby and she said NO.

The seed inside the berry is toxic but only when chewed. Do some of your own research, but I personally would not fear the juice on my own pregnant belly.

Thank you both!

I have done some research and found much what you are both saying...... (yes.. susun weed.. -smiles-)  The seed is toxic, but not the berry,, and honestly after doing research on some of the "henna" that are being sold on the market,, I feel safer with the berry juice.

I appreciate the help.  Not sure when I am going to have my daughter do this.. I know my belly has really grown, but I am in my 6th month now.. so here soon I am sure..

loving hugs..

I have had pokeroot berry juice painted on my body in a loving, intentional way (though not pregnant!) and it was one of the most soothing experiences i have had! I hope it was this way for you!
