Food as Medicine
« on: January 26, 2012, 05:43:15 PM »
I am reflecting today on the deep wisdom of having our food also be our medicine. We live in a world of compartmentalization, where "medicine" is something you keep in a pillbox and take twice daily. I am not a fan of taking vitamin supplements for this reason- if you consume a diet made up of nutrient dense foods prepared in ways that unlock their mineral and vitamin potential, there is no need to invest in supplements. The herbal infusions I drink every day I consider to be my vitamin supplement! Of course, circumstances exist where certain supplements may be necessary, and in fact it would be foolish to just rely on food source alone, just as if you broke your leg you would probably want to get to an ER as quickly as possible instead of just taking herbs.

The Wise Woman Tradition is not dogmatic, it recognizes the wisdom of responding to every situation with an appropriate action. With this, food as the foundation of health and healing is one of the basic beliefs within this ancient tradition. Eating wild greens such as nettle, dandelion, plantain, purslane, and chickweed is a great example of the marriage of food and medicine. I love making wild green pesto with tamari, miso, and tahini to put up for winter enjoyment. Another great example of recieving food as medicine is through my new favorite thing: Adaptogen Balls. By combining adaptogenic herbs such as maca, ashwaganda, licorice, and eluthero with raw honey and nut butters (peanut, almond, sunflower, cashew, etc), you end up with a delicious snack that can replace a bag of chips, a cup of coffee, or a candy bar. I hope these ideas inspire you to come up with your own creative ways of deeply nourishing yourselves!

Hi Jenna,
I appreciate your post.  In fact, I JUST came from my spice rack, not more than 2 minutes ago, thinking "there is so much medicine there! I wonder if anyone has done a class on the medicinal properties contained in an average spice rack!"

The background to that thought is simple.  Today has been a rough day emotionally...for no apparent reason.  I'm eating well, taking my adaptogens, and my vitamins (which in my history has been important for me to stay healthy), my work is busy and full.  And yet, today I'm just struggling.  Since my emotions feel stagnant I decided to drink some tumeric, cumin, coriander and ginger to get things flowing again.  They may not be local...but they were handy. And for me...it works.

So yes...while food is definitely medicine in so many ways...so are my spices!  Love it.
Blessings!

I very much agree with this sentiment, in fact its just what my parents told me when I was young and didn't want to eat something on my plate. I didn't understand it then, but I very much do now. I am just now recovering from a bout of illness in which I used herbs and food as my medicine. The food was such an important part because the nourishment my body needed to fight the infection was going to be supplied by what I ate. It was so vital to pick nutrient-rich foods like raw organic butter, bone broths, yogurt and raw milk. I am blessed to have access to such medicine, and am still so amazed at how quickly I am recovering my strength. It is so amazing the impact the food we put in our body has. It really is the foundation from where we build our health and well-being.
